Episode transcript

Hi, and welcome to the Travel Transformation Podcast, where we talk all things travel and all things transformation. I'm your host, Jessica Grace Coleman, and I'm currently in South Africa, where I'm staying in a cute coastal town called Kalk Bay near Cape Town. And, if you've heard my other podcasts that I've recorded here, you'll know that I have been having some issues. So, for the next few weeks, I thought I'd do something a little different, just until normal service resumes.

I run the Flip the Script Travel Transformation Academy, and you can find more info on this traveltransformationcoach.com/academy. And, as part of this, I record video courses and trainings on various topics. One of my favourites is the Flip the Script on Fear Challenge, which was a real challenge I did back in December 2021 and which was the catalyst for me changing my life and going travelling.

There are four main parts to this mini video course I did, so I thought I'd take the audio from each part and give it to you here on the podcast for absolutely free – bargain! Please note that these trainings refer to a Flip the Script on Fear Workbook and my own Flip the Script on Fear Challenge Diary, which you get when you become a member of the Academy. And again, to find out more, just head to traveltransformationcoach.com/academy.

Today is the last part of this mini-challenge series where we'll be looking at my personal challenge as well as a little conclusion. So, without further ado, let's complete our Flip the Script on Fear Challenge.

So I did the Flip the Script on Fear Challenge for 30 days, and what came out of it was more than I could ever have expected. As I've mentioned, you can read all of my journal entries in my challenge diary in the course resources, but for now, here are just a few things I did during my 30-day challenge, from the mundane stuff to the fun tasks to the really, really hard things.

One thing I did was to book and attend long overdue doctor's appointments. I know, putting off medical things is terrible, but I hate going to the doctors, so I often put these things off – unless it's really urgent, of course. This took a huge weight off my mind and encouraged me to get healthier again.

I also got my nose pierced 20 years after I first wanted it done. I love it, and I'm so glad I did it. I guess I just stopped caring what other people would think, and I booked the appointment on a whim and went and got it done that same day.

I also had some tough conversations I'd been putting off for a long time. I hate confrontation and I'm not good with conflict, so I try to stay away from conversations I know could hurt other people, but it got to the point where I couldn't leave it any longer. These conversations had monumental consequences, and the relief I felt after having them was immense.

I also gave my notice in on my rental house, ready for going travelling and changing my entire lifestyle. This was huge, and I'm not sure I'd have got there so quickly if I hadn't been doing this challenge.

I chose to do my 30 days at a time when I was feeling a little stuck in several areas of my life. I also realised that after a couple of years of pandemic stress, and a back injury that forced me into becoming a hermit even before the COVID lockdowns, there were a lot more things that seemed to scare me these days, or at least make me anxious. And I was fed up of putting things off after the hellish pandemic. I wanted to start taking some action. I wanted to start living again.

I did some serious things, some silly things, and some fun things, and they all added up to quite the experience and quite the transformation. Here's a quick list of my favourite things I did for the challenge and why they were so impactful:

Getting my nose pierced kind of made me feel like a teenager again, and I love how it looks.

Having the tough conversation with my partner about going travelling was one of the hardest things I did, but it ultimately led to a huge lifestyle overhaul that I've been wanting for years and that I truly believe I need at this point in my life. I loved writing a thank you email to Bob Goff, a man I really look up to and who lives his life in such an amazing way. I wanted to thank him for his book, Dream Big, and I told him about the impact it had on me in terms of wanting to have a more adventurous life.

Speaking of that last one, here's the email that Bob Goff sent back to me: ‘Hi, Jess. Great to hear from you. What a fun adventure you're on. It takes a lot of courage to overcome the headwinds that health setbacks can present. Take lots of notes on what you're learning, and I'll look forward to seeing a couple of books from you soon.’

I highly recommend emailing people you admire and thanking them for the impact they've had on your life as part of the challenge. It's a good gratitude practice to do anyway, and it's even better if they reply.

By the end of this challenge, I had got fitter, changed my appearance, furthered my business, boosted my confidence, got on top of my life admin, and completely transformed my lifestyle – not bad for a 30-day challenge I came up with myself! Make sure you read my challenge diary for more details on what I did, why I did it, and the results I saw from my 30-day challenge.

Well, that's it. Congratulations for getting to the end of this mini-course. And, if you started the challenge, congrats on that too. I really do believe this could be life-changing for you, just like it's been for me. And, even if it's not, I think you'll learn something about yourself and hopefully get outside your comfort zone for a little while, which is always a good thing to do.

I also highly recommend trying this challenge with a friend or a group of friends. Having people to hold you accountable is always useful, and besides, it's just more fun when you do it with other people. If you're posting about this challenge on social media, remember to use the hashtag #flipthescriptonfearchallenge. And, if you see any good results from doing this challenge, please, please let me know. I'd love to hear them. And – if you're okay with it – I'd love to post your wins on my own social media and maybe include them in an upcoming book of mine as well.

As ever, I recommend taking a moment to celebrate any wins you have along the way. And, if you finish a full 30, ten, or five days of this challenge, celebrate big. Open a bottle of bubbly, have a nice cake and a cup of tea, or have an impromptu dance party, because that's a big achievement.

Thanks for taking part in this challenge, and don't forget to let me know how you get on. Until next time, keep flipping the script on fear and I'll catch you on the flip side, bye!

That's it for this week, and that's also it for our mini Flip the Script On Fear Challenge series. Thanks for taking part, and please do let me know if you got anything good out of this series – and, if you took part in the challenge yourself, I'd love to know. You can email me at info@traveltransformationcoach.com or DM me on Instagram @traveltransformationcoach.

Normal service will resume next week with my South Africa Round-up episode, so until then, I'll catch you on the flip side, bye!
